Year 7 Begin Rocket Car Project

Posted on 20/10/2017

Race for the Line – How fast will your Car go?
This year students in Year 7 will have the opportunity to design, build and test a mini racing car. On Race Day we will be inviting the RAF in to support us as we attempt to get the cars to travel at more than 100 miles per hour. An attached rocket may help them. Fortunately for us the cars will be too small for the students to ride in but we have started to collect the resources that students will need to make them. All students in Year 7 will be in teams of four responsible for making sure that their car is ready for Race Day.

Date for the diary – Year 7 Race Day –  7th February 2018
This year there is a sponsorship aspect from the forces and the aerospace industry that means costs will be reduced/removed for the basic kit. If there are costs involved, then the students (in their teams) are responsible for resourcing/recycling their own wheels and axles and/or marketing and getting local community/businesses to sponsor them. This will enable them to improve both their planning and enterprise skills.

We will be rewarding students for their teamwork and design skills during the year along with their ability to apply their Science, Maths, Design Technology and Computing ability in their team. Theory to support students will be covered in lessons. There will also be a chance to compete as fastest teams in the school and the chance to then compete on a regional level at RAF Yeovilton next year.

Let the Race for the Line begin!
