Year 6 Boys County Cup Final v Epiphany
The much anticipated Boys Under 11 Dorset Schools County Cup Final happened against Epiphany School, kindly hosted by Bournemouth School For Boys after Easter. The lads were in tremendous spirits and certainly hid any nerves on the journey to the match. Unfortunately we conceded a goal early on and this was a psychological test for our team and one they responded to positively. We played some fantastic football where we were intent on passing through the team and using the wingers with the excellent width offered by Jake and Morgan. At times our football was a joy to watch and I wished I was a neutral to appreciate the quality of the play but I was nervously poised on the touchline willing our boys to equalise. We created a few opportunities to score and shots from Freddie and George were blocked. Callum was absolutely brilliant in midfield and what a time to save his best game of the season where he was getting in tackles and blocks when we had to win the ball back. We had to concentrate in defence and our excellent back three of Toby, Finn and Ethan were composed and solid at the same time. At half time we were 1-0 down and the boys were certainly not dejected and I was confident that we would score.

In the second half we took the game to Epiphany and Tyler was getting into his stride and creating chances but we just couldn’t score. Harry in goal saved some long shots and Toby made some last ditch tackles to keep us in the match. Eventually we equalised and what a goal. Tyler danced his way into the box and produced a fine pass for George to volley home. The excitement from the boys was evident and the goal was much deserved. Surely we would get a winner! The match swung end to end and George hit the post but Epiphany were still a threat and they managed to score with a free kick. Our boys had to try and come from behind again. We gave everything to the task. Josh worked extremely hard in midfield chasing down every ball in the attempt to create attacks and Jake and Morgan were superb on the wings. Tyler hit the crossbar with a super free kick near the end and Freddie was creating chances.

Unfortunately it was not to be and we lost 2-1 and I congratulate Epiphany on their victory.

The most difficult part for me is trying to lift the spirits of our dejected lads and I certainly felt for them. It was inspiring to watch them put in so much effort for themselves, their team and the school. It hurts to lose in any final but my pride is immense and watching the boys give it their all with such passion is all you can ask and the boys need to remember that. Hopefully this will spur them on in the future and they have been fantastic ambassadors for Ferndown Middle School this season!
