If you thought teachers were stay at home types, you might be surprised to learn that three members of staff decided to be a little more daring recently.
Since September, Mrs Brazier, Mrs Kiernan and Mrs Melia have been busily fund raising for Down’s Syndrome Association, with the main event being a tandem sky dive on the 26th September 2015. This daring leap from 15,000 feet was Mrs Brazier’s idea, who having passed a significant birthday, wanted to do something a little more unusual. So the other two staff kindly joined in!
Also bravely stepping in at the last minute to make the jump was Mrs Dale’s son Jim, who was raising money for BASICS (British Association for Immediate Care), which is a charity that supports volunteer emergency doctors and raises funds for emergency equipment.
The charity was chosen because Mrs Brazier’s nephew, now 12, was born with Down’s. William and his family were all there to watch as the intrepid jumpers, luckily strapped to expert instructors, somersaulted out of the plane. Everyone landed safely, having experienced a minute of free fall at 125 miles per hour, followed by a more gentle sway under the parachute. The sun shone, there were few clouds and the views of the countryside were fantastic.
Pupils and staff at FMS have been wonderful and supported the fundraising events. £100 was raised by the Teddy Bear raffle, £87 by the cake sale and £95 by the coin collections. The staffroom sponsorship forms have also raised £150.
Mrs Brazier said, “Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us. This is the first time I have organised my own charity events and I have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown, it’s been truly marvellous.”
Mrs Brazier’s online fundraising page remains open until Christmas as she is hoping to reach £1000 by the end of the year.
