Ferndown Students' Take National Science Prize

Posted on 22/11/2018

Congratulations to Jasmine, Bethany and Isobel who are the overall national winners of the CLEAPSS primary science competition ‘No more cabbage’ 2018.

As part of the weekly science club pupils were challenged to use practical enquiry to find an alternative natural pH indicator to red cabbage. Jasmine, Bethany and Isobel worked together and supported each other to produce a 10 page report showing their ideas, evidence of the enquiry process, the new pH indicator – with procedures used and records and explanation of results.

A special award assembly was held on Tuesday 20th November. The girls’ parents and science governors were invited to attend. Jason Harding from CLEAPSS presented trophies and certificates to the girls. They also received a goody bag including Lego and the CLEAPSS safety bunny. The school was awarded a beautiful glass trophy to display.

Jonathan Owens from SciChem presented the school with £100 cheque to spend on science equipment together with a wireless temperature sensor which will help us to introduce technology into standard science practical work.

As part of the rewards, during British Science Week 15th March 2019, Tim Harrison from Bristol Chem Labs will visit the school providing an exciting interactive science road show. This show will enthuse the pupils with lots of visual demonstrations, colourful experiments and even a few explosions.
