Summer Farewell

Posted on 20/07/2019

Last night, our year 8’s gathered in the evening to celebrate the end of their time here at Ferndown Middle School. At the outset of year 5, four years can seem like a long time, however, many of them will say that their time here has flown by.

However, can I take this moment to congratulate not just our year 8’s but all our students on their achievements, not just the awards and commendations that have been presented with, but the many times that as a school we have celebrated their successes. The end of the year is a good time to reflect, not just on what you have learnt not just in lessons but socially, emotionally and physically about yourself. Reflect on your first day at the school and how far you have come and changed in that time.

As we head into summer break and look forward to starting a new year in September, can I offer a few words of encouragement.

Be brave and Positive
Cast your net wide. Be courageous about meeting people, about having a go at something you haven’t done before. Have big dreams and ambitions. We have prepared you to be resilient and equipped you with the grit and determination to succeed and overcome the inevitable knock-backs along the way. It’s easy to feel defeated at times, but view these moments as a challenge. Positivity attracts positivity – and positive people are generally great to be around.

Don’t be Afraid to Fail
Learn from your mistakes and persevere, It has been said that, “All the unhappiest people have never failed at anything.”

Don’t stop Learning
Take a piece of the school with you. Over time you will have absorbed not only information, knowledge and skills, but also an institution’s values, culture and history. Take that experience and use it to make a difference in the world.” The Duke of Wellington said this…

‘Wise people learn when they can; fools learn when they must.’

Love of learning, is a habit that good schools instill in young people. You’ll need it at university, at work, and simply to make the most of enjoying life.”

Finally, never imagine that you are too small or insignificant to make a difference. Everyone can make a difference and play their role in society and together we can make a positive and significant difference to the world.

Have a great summer break, good luck to all our year 8’s and we looking forward to starting the new year together in September.
