Year 8's Get Baking

Posted on 15/11/2017

The year 8’s have shown impressive caking making skills over the last 2 weeks, taking up the challenge of making Victoria sponges filled with fresh fruits and stewed seasonal fruits.  This is to aid their understanding of how they can make puddings and deserts more nutritionally valuable.  We have also looked at alternative fillings, such as custard with stewed fruit, as an alternative to butter cream or icing.  We also looked at the use of double cream and how some dairy sources can be valuable.  We weighed the pros and cons of sugar versus fat and tried to decided which was worse for our bodies.  Harrison created an impressive passion fruit and mango sponge.  Wesley created a lovely cream cake with strawberries.  Every week Emma , Anglea and Hannah excel in their skills and effort.  Liam created a very decedent cream cake with raspberries piled all over it!  Tyler modified his sponge, by adding cinnamon and grated carrot to make a tasty carrot cake, which he finished with butter icing.  Nathan added an additional layer with shaped tins.  Ethan created a mixed fruit sponge that was colourful and professional.  A fantastic effort, well done year 8.
