STEM Week at Ferndown Middle School

Posted on 09/02/2018

This week all year groups have had opportunities to be a part of STEM activities, here is what the science department has been up to.

Medical Mavericks – Year 6 Visit Ferndown Upper School
Ferndown Upper School organised an opportunity for some of our Year 6 students to experience the Medical Mavericks’ ‘Careers in Health’ workshop. Medical Mavericks provide careers, STEM & sport enrichment experiences for schools and colleges.

This was an exciting, hands-on experience. The pupils experienced some of the following activities: take blood from a fake arm, record their own ECG, try keyhole surgery and see inside their body with an ultrasound. The pupils had an exciting and memorable time.

For more information you can visit the Medical Mavericks website at:

Science Dome – Year 5 and 8 Enter the Dome
The Science Dome provides an additional science resource and presents a different learning experience to children.

It is a fully digital experience, in a blacked-out purpose built dome showing 360 degree pictures and films with special multimedia equipment and lens to provide a spectacular presenter-led interactive show for education.

Both shows were chosen to reinforce and enhance the learning from this term.

The show Earth and Beyond for year 5 and the show Down to Earth for year 8 was thoroughly enjoyed by all participating pupils.

Year 8 STEM Challenge
Some Year 8 girls have been working towards a STEM CREST award.

The challenge run by Soroptimist International Bournemouth asked the girls to create a solution to help people in the poorest parts of our world.

The idea and design needed to be sustainable, with the materials affordable with minimal impact upon the environment and fit for its intended purpose.

Every week the girls have spent time designing, researching, experimenting and discussing their solution to the challenge. We have been lucky enough to have the support of FUS. The girls spending some evenings with Mrs Bothamley at FMS or at FUS. The girls have worked hard and are now nearing the submission date for the project. Good Luck to the STEM girls.
