Year 8 Rabari Embroidery

Posted on 02/11/2020

Year 8 have been creating their own dowry bags, based on the work on the ancient Rabari tribe, who live in Kutch, in Gujarat in India. They have looked at how the Rabari create their own embroidered codes, based on objects that surround them in their everyday lives.

They have understood how Globalisation has changed their everyday objects and how these are reflected in their embroideries. Students came up with their own codes, based on their own culture and lives. They have then put their motifs into repeat on a dowry bag. By doing this, they have understood the traditional roles of men and women in Rabari society and this sparked many conversations. They added beautiful pom poms to their bags, using the fork technique.

They finished their bags using blanket stitch. The results are striking and show their passion for finishing their patterns.

Well done, Year 8. An engaging half term with lots of learning opportunities.
