Local Adventure 2019

Posted on 10/06/2019

The Local Adventure visit proves as popular as ever; it gives pupils the opportunity to try new challenges and to overcome fears.

It all began with Moors Valley, a beautiful forest location, which is known to many pupils. During the day the pupils explored the park on bikes, tackled the fitness trail, the tree top trail and a firm favourite was the play park with its fantastic zip wire.

The rest of the week was spent at Butchers Coppice, a local scout centre. This centre has been chosen as it provides a wide range of activities, has highly qualified, encouraging instructors and the monies all go towards a helping an organisation aimed at young people.

During the week every child had the chance to try archery, rifle shooting and a new favourite, tomahawk throwing. Tomahawk throwing was certainly harder than it looked!

A new activity this year was the Cavebus. This is actually a bus that has been converted inside to simulate caving. Unbelievably the Cavebus has over 3 levels of tunnels to crawl through. The pupils loved the challenge, wearing the safety helmets and head torches was all part of the experience.

High ropes, the Leap of Faith, abseiling, rock climbing and the 15m pole climb to reach the zip wire provided plenty of opportunities for pupils to overcome any fear of heights. It was heart-warming to see the other pupils encourage those pupils who were finding the activities challenging; even better to see so many pupils overcome their fears and to climb higher than ever before.

It was lovely to see the groups of Year 7 and Year 8 pupils mixing well together and making new friendships. Special thanks to all the staff that support me in the running of this week, Mrs Burton, Miss Hurst, Mrs Widger, Mrs Williams, Mrs Sims and Mrs Finch.

We are all looking forward to 2020!
